SID Project

The SID - Sociologiloghe In Dialogo group is a study and research laboratory, born within the Doctoral School in Sociology, Organizations and Cultures in 2020, accompanied by Mariagrazia Santagati.

The group intends to deepen and enhance the contribution that women have made to the development of sociology, from a theoretical, empirical and methodological point of view, in the awareness that, not yet so widespread in the Italian context, in the process of institutionalization of the discipline, the reflections of women sociologists have been underestimated, removed and often forgotten.

The main objectives of the SID Group are:

  1. to reconstruct the presence of women in sociology from the origin of the discipline, at an international level and in the Italian context;
  2. deepening, recovering, translating the works of the so-called "founding sisters";
  3. investigate the cultural and social dimensions that have favored or hindered the process of scientific legitimization of women social scientists;
  4. to study women's access to culture and academia, analysing constraints and opportunities in biographies, in comparison with male careers, and dialoguing with other disciplinary perspectives.

Gendering Sociology. Proposal for Research and Teaching

The project, which was one of the three winners of Fondazione Cariplo's "Young Researchers 2024" call, aims to rethink the sociological canon, rediscovering and enhancing women's contribution to social sciences . It starts, in fact, from the consideration that research and teaching of Italian sociology are based on an androcentric and Western-centric canon, excluding or marginalizing the reflection of the first social scientists.

Launched in September 2024, Gendering Sociology is a three-year action-research activity.

The project makes use of a multidisciplinary and international research team.

Women at the origin of Italian sociology, in collaboration with Sveva Magaraggia, University of Milano-Bicocca

  • Qualitative survey aimed at reconstructing the biographies of Italian sociologists born up to 1950 (2021- ongoing)

  • A network of 50 Latin American and European scholars for research and training on "social theories in the classical period", coordinated by María Rocío Navarro Fosar (UNED, Spain)

Series "Women in Sociology", Vita e Pensiero

"Women in Sociology" is a series founded by the SiD group in 2023. Directed by Mariagrazia Santagati, the series aims to rediscover and raise awareness of the theoretical, methodological and empirical contribution of women in sociology. The volumes offer re-editions by Italian authors and/or unpublished translations by foreign authors, ranging from the writings of the founding sisters to contemporary texts.
